When it's okay to steal

When I was in my teens, I had a small "stealing" problem, and by problem, I mean that I would occasionally take things that weren't mine but that I wanted. It was never anything big, usually it included lip gloss or notebooks (harmless) but even as an adult, I still think it's still okay to steal in certain situations.

Now I don't want you all to think I'm going to Nordstrom or Gap or a major store and taking something off the rack - that's shoplifting - but I'm pleased to say I only steal now when necessary and it's mostly for revenge.

For example, yesterday I tweeted that my lunch was stolen in our company kitchen. The refrigerator is jammed packed with stuff, which is why I label and hide my food to avoid it being taken. This is the second time that it's happened lately and it drives me insane. Someone else is dining on my lunch, which I brought to avoid having to buy it, which I'm sometimes forced to do if it doesn't exist anymore in the refrigerator.

So upon discovering that I was half lunch-less yesterday, I did what I think anyone else would do, I took someone else's food in the fridge so I didn't have to go buy something. Is it fair? No. I don't know the person whose yogurt I took, but it was delicious. Do I feel bad about it? No. It stinks that someone else had to be partially lunch-less too, but it's the "circle of life." I can't help that.

Still bristling from yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised today when a) my lunch was still waiting for me in the kitchen and b) someone was nice enough to leave a magical cupcake at my desk while I was in a meeting, but with no note. I won't lie, at first I was afraid to eat it for fear of random lunch-stealing retaliation but once I identified the source (who I trust), I enjoyed it and it was lovely. See kids, it pays to steal. You might come in the next day and have a cupcake waiting for you :) That's a ringing endorsement.

Here's a picture of my "thank-you-for-stealing" cupcake. It's adorable, it looks like a caterpillar, it's delicious and I haven't gotten sick yet, bonus!

  2. Ohhhh man...I would cut someone if they tried to eat my lunch. CUT THEM AND EAT THEM. It's only fair.

  5. There's an old army saying: "There's only one thief in the Army, everyone's just trying to get their shit back." That's more true than I would imagine.

  6. Stealing for the greater good is always ok.

  7. Ha! You're so funny. I know what you mean about taking insignificant things. I would never take anything that didn't belong to me on purpose, but say if I'm at a store and I realize I forgot to pay for a soda or if I leave the grocery store and later realize that the clerk forgot to ring up my purchases that I had underneath the cart, I think it's a little exciting. Probably because I don't really do anything else that's bad-ass! LOL.

  12. I'm totally down with stealing someone's yogurt if I get a cupcake like that! But I totally agree, it's the circle of life. There are some days when I'm patiently waiting for noon to roll around because I'm stoked about my lunch and when it's gone it ruins my day.

  13. Mmmmm cupcake.
But I've taken the odd thing from the work fridge before, and it has NEVER resulted in cupcake. What am I doing wrong? Any advanced tips?

  14. Hmm not sure I agree with that but to me that cupcake looks scary!! I'm glad you waited until you'd identified the source...

  15. Ok that cupcake is a little sketch... glad you at least knew its bearer!

But I totally support the stealing! When I worked at a museum in NYC, someone would steal my sandwich almost every day, no matter how many threatening notes I attached to it. SO aggravating. And I never had the guts to steal anyone else's, so I am delighted that you do! Go girl!

  17. now, that would never happen to me. looks yummy though. PS>Should your lunch go missing, please stay away from my work fridge.

  18. I'm more the 'oh did you charge this as well?' kind of girl who feels bad about not paying for what she's taking. People used to destroy or steal my things at school quite often so I really can't stand any kind of stealing anymore.

    The caterpillar's cute though.

  23. Aww! I'm SO going to make caterpillar cupcakes this weekend now. And the stealing? I do it too. You have to always remember to hide the evidence!

  24. I would have been so upset if someone ate my lunch. It's MY LUNCH. Our office refrigerator is pretty contained. No stealing yet.

    Yet.

  26. I don't know that I'd say it's OK to steal per se, but I certainly think there are levels, and some are worse than others.

  27. OMG! That shit happens at my job too! It's very frustrating when you go through the trouble of bringing your lunch, labeling it and even then someone EATS IT!

People are UNBELIEVABLE! But hey, life goes on and one day I'll eat someone's lunch... just because! lOl

  28. wow, so is the person that left it for you the same person who stole half your lunch? That looks like one of the brightest cupcake colors ever....what is on it Wasabi and ketchup? ;)

  29. HA! Thank you for the PSA on why we should steal.

I had my lunch stolen once. It was a sad day, especially since I was so looking forward to what I had brought to eat.

This reminds me of that Friends episode when someone steals Ross' sandwich. MY SANDWICH!

  30. i would love to come back from lunch to have a cupcake waiting for me at my desk. that would be lovely.

  31. I wish cupcakes just appeared on my desk! I so would have stolen some lunch too, did you ever find out who took it?

  32. It sort of reminds me of a dragon.... But maybe that's just me.

  33. i see seaweed actually.

someone stole my pizza just last week for the first time since I started this job a year ago. It was INFURIATING especially since I had planned to eat it strategically before I went out drinking after work. I don't think I'm in the camp of stealing someone else's though. I mean, why make someone else's day miserable too?

  34. i steal one thing and that is $5 c.o. bigelow lipgloss from bath and body works. and i always buy a ton of other stuff but steal the damn lipgloss once a year. i have NO idea why. yummy cupcake!

  35. That is the most creative cupcake I've ever seen! I'm also too afraid of the Karma I'd create by stealing so when things like that happen I just take it as a sign I'm meant to eat out. Like maybe that's the universe's way of getting me to run into the man who will turn out to be my husband or something!

  36. And this is why I don't use the fridge at work. Well, that and the fact that it's a mini fridge and my shit can't fit. But that's beside the point. It's a lunch bag & ice pack for me! I'm so cool.

  37. It kind of looks like green bacon. Yummy yummy green bacon.

  38. LOL! This cracked me up. And no worries--I'll be sure to save you a seat in Hell, lol!
