My makeup crush costs money

I love makeup. I love trying new makeup products (especially lip gloss) and looking at rows and rows of product, like a kid in the candy store.

That's why Sephora is a dangerous place to put me because I rotate between feeling infatuated with makeup and overwhelmed by all my choices. After awhile, everything looks alike! Rows of mascara that look the same as the one next to it.

Lately, I've been trying to cut back on impulse makeup buys (hello recession) and spread out the makeup purchases so I don't spend $100 on my products in one day because I need to replenish my stock. By spreading that out, I trick myself into thinking that I'm not actually spending collectively that much on makeup.

My colleague Meg and I also talk about makeup on a daily basis, giving each other recommendations on products to buy and stay away from. I really think she could be the one to help me become more eyeliner-proficient.

Anyhow, here are some recent makeup purchases that I love:
So what your your favorite makeup or beauty products right now? Am I the only one who goes a little overboard with buying makeup?

Tomorrow is supposed to be 70 degrees in Chicago. I could lose my mind I'm so excited. Time to get some sun on my pasty, non-spray tanned body!!

  1. I'm confused about the Milk. I've wanted to it forever but I never figured out you don't need water..tricky. My make-up death trap is Benefit. Everytime I go in I buy soemthing. I NEED something. Like right now, I NEED posy tint...I think I'll pick some up tomorrow.

  2. Hey! :) I don't know if you checked back on my blog or not, but your welcome! You deserve the award, love your blog!

Btw, are you getting the feed now, I'm really not sure how to correct it if you're not! I just posted again today! I know sunny weather finally in the midwest, crazy isn't it when less than 2 weeks ago, 6-7 inches of snow! :P Crazy midwestern weather, can't make up its mind!

PS I can count on my 2 hands the times I put on makeup this past year, lol, but I love Clinique's stuff in general, I do use their 3 step. When I was researching makeup for a wedding I was in, I was overwhelmed! :)

  3. I could spend a years pay on makeup. But then I'd be homeless and have no place to wear the make up.

It does get expensive. I try and buy mascara, foundation and lip gloss at the drug store and spend money on my favorite stuff like MAC eyeshadow and eyeliner.

  4. Not only can I help you become proficient at applying eyeliner (not that you need help girl!), but I'm also good at helping justify makeup expenditures :)

Tomorrow's topic: eyeshadow. See you online. ;)

  6. oh makeup is a vicious, vicious cycle for me. i always feel like i never have enough even though i barely wear that much on a daily basis.

right now, i'm really into mascaras. i'm a huge fan of DiorShow but i want to try clinique's mascara and covergirl's lashblast.

oh, and i also need to find a good mineral-based makeup.

  7. I love, love, love makeup. And like you, I've been trying to buy things one at time, as if it will make it less expensive. But it makes me feel better, even if I'm still spending the same amount.

For awhile I was only wearing Bare Minerals, but now I seem to be on a Bobbi Brown kick. And I'm currently looking for a new concealer...any suggestions?

My favorite thing is probably mascara. DiorShow is by far my favorite, but I love Chanel Inimitable, too. I like to switch off between the two. They're a bit pricey, but totally worth the splurge.

70 tomorrow?! Amazing! I might have to hit up BerryChill for the third time this week. Warm weather makes me crave ice cream/frozen yogurt like crazy.

  8. If you were to come to the Beauty Bash, you would save money -- even with the cost to travel! I LOVE makeup and I have purposely left my wallet in the car when I walk into a Sephora store with a friend. Its a dangerous place for me. My current favorite -- Laura Geller tinted spackle and Laura full figure mascara, it makes my lashes look ridiculously long. LOVE!

  9. I loooooooooooove make-up. I work in make-up, all my money goes right back into the products. It's a shame.

I love Diorshow and Givenchy Phenomena. I'm playing most with Bare Escentuals Buxom which I am having a love/hate relationship with. It makes the fullest, healthiest looking lashes, BUT I think it turns grey over time.

I'm on a mission to find the most epic eye liner now. MAC is what I use now.. but it doesn't quite cut it. Lancome is my next bet.

  10. I don't buy makeup very often, but when I do I go crazy! I love eyeshadow and have about 8 or 9 different things of it. All in pretty much the exact same neutral colours :-)

  11. I love makeup. I tend to go through phases where I buy a lot of one kind of product until I find the perfect one. I'm finally good on eyeliners, but now I'm going crazy with blush. I try to convince myself that once I find the perfect product, then I'll be set, but that never happens, because the whole cycle starts over and I start looking for new things.

  12. I'm holding off till the first (payday) for a major sephora expendature.

I love smashbox color correcting primer.

  13. Bobbi brown eyeliner. I have a lot of make ups but that one is a special one. I have small eyes, that eyeliner is a weapon for that sexy sultry look. LOL.

  14. i'll let you have the makeup crush for me. i have basic brown and black mascara. i have basic eye liner. no lip liner and a few "color coordinated 3 hue" eye shadows (you have to color coordinate your eyeshadow with the colors your wearing after all...) and i have 2 shades of lipstick: light and dark/day and night lol i don't wear blush *at all* i think it makes me look like a clown.

all my stuff is covergirl. its good quality and inexpensive. walmart and target are my goto for makeup stores! lol. i've never stepped foot inside a sephora.

some girls at work were talking about thier makeup costs a month and some spend in excess of $300 a month on brushes and misc makeup items. no way for me!!

  15. I don't spend a massive amount on make-up but that's cos I already have way too much of it.

My favourites? My set of urban decay eyeshadows (don't know how i lived without them) and a skin illuminator I got from Virgin Vie cosmetics which means I don't need to bother with foundation as it makes a nice glow instead!

  16. I'd love to get me some Sephora but I don't know where I can get it here....
I wrote an entry last week about my make-up habits...I just can't stop buying it!

  17. I hardly ever wear make-up, but I have a few basics that I use and that's it. I have yves saint laurent touche brilliance lipgloss, bourjois eyeliner in purple (black is too black for me) and make up for ever smoky lash mascara. Only I still get lumpy eye lashes from almost any mascara. It's very frustrating.

  18. I'm actually planning a trip to Sephora today. If you are a Beauty insider, it's 15% off on everything this week!! ;)

  19. You should try E.L.F. Everything is $1 pretty much.

  20. I used to buy expensive make-up. Then I switched to more affordable stuff. Over the last couple years? Well, a little moisturizer, eye liner and mascara is all I use. I've gotten so lazy. Sigh.

Having said that, the most money I've ever dropped was on my Dior nighttime moisturizer. Apparently it's worth it.

  21. I love make up, but for some reason I've never bought the more expensive brands. I've always been a Cover Girl and Maybelline user. Maybe one of these days I'll upgrade...

  22. I am a fan of Smashbox tinted moisturiser. I love Max Factor Facefinity compact foundation, although I've not found anywhere that sells it since moving from the UK. Elizabeth Arden Lash extending treatment mascara is awesome. I love make up. Haven't been able to buy any since being laid off, so I'm now looking for more affordable options until I can afford to slurge again. Great post, I love hearing what other people recommend :)

  23. As the recession gets worse, makeup was one of the first things to go, for me. Oh don't get get wrong, I still WEAR it, but I quickly learned that drugstore makeup is basically the same as department store makeup. I used to wear ONLY Clinique stuff, but I've found that giving it up in exchange for the cheaper brands has saved me loads of $.

  24. Stila's tinted moisturizer & foundation are pretty much my bread & butter.

  25. Being honest I'm not much of a makeup person. Not my thing. I much prefer to just do the wash/tone/moisturize thing and be done with it. However, I think I want to check out all four things you listed. Especially the Smashbox and the Neutrogena items.

  26. I never want any particular makeup or skin care product until I walk into Sephora and WANT IT ALL!

    ReplyDelete
  27. i am so naive when it comes to make up, i really wish i was more into it sometimes.

  28. 1. I LOVE Sephora
    2. I LOVE Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer
    3. I'll have to try that eye cream -- undereye circles are my #1enemy
    4. Couldn't be more delighted that it's supposed to be in the 70's today. Bout freaking time.

  29. I have extremely acne prone, oily skin, so I try to do as little makeup as possible. Which is unfortunate because makeup is great. MAC anything makes me happy. Their studio fix foundation and blot powder is really good. NYX is also a great budget line for eyeshadow (see their products at cherryculture.com)

  30. I love make up. Correction -- I love to BUY make up. I could drop a wad of cash at Sephora so quickly it would make your head spin. Then, I take the make up home, use it for a few days, and then never touch it again. I really just don't ever wear it. What is wrong with me???

  31. I am SUCH a makeup junkie. I bought Makeup Forever from Sephora a few months ago and the stuff is amazing-- It has lasted me way longer than MAC ever does.

p.s. i think everything is still 15% off at sephora for beauty insiders. great deal!!!

  32. I've heard that the Sephora return policy is incredible, and that you can return anything you buy, even used. So even if something doesn't work out, it's no risk.

I can't live anymore without liquid black eyeliner (love Sephora brand)or in the summer, gold eyeliner. Sounds flashy, but it's great with very black mascara.

  33. sephora is an evil, evil place. its like target. you walk in there and somehow $100 just flies out of your wallet :)

  34. I will definitely be trying the eye brightener, I've been looking for a good one so thanks.

On masacara, I LOVE mascara and have tried so many. Current fav? Lancome Defincils. Followed by Too Faced Lash Injection and following that, Bad Gal Lash. Others I've tried and liked are Loreal Double Extend because it has two sides, a primer side and a mascara side, perfect for thin lashes!

    Thanks for the recommendations!

  35. I'm a HUGE Sephora fan! And the Smashbox Under Eye Liner is one of my lifesavers because the bags under my eyes are a little OOC. That's probably my favorite makeup thing right now, though I am loving the Sephora eye shadow color pallet that includes oranges, browns and pinks.
