Yes, some of the images were frightening.
But it got me thinking about plastic surgery and if I would ever do it. I mean, I watch "Nip/Tuck," which is a pretty compelling reason not to, but sometimes, I think I would get a little work done.
No matter how much I work out, the spare tire never goes away, my boobs seem to be in permi-sag, and while spared the "family nose," there is a bump on my bridge that could vanish.
And I have some scars from medical tests and from surgery for a ovarian cyst that I'd like to wipe away. I don't need those scars to remind me of those nightmares. Plus, I fear the wrinkles that will develop on my forehead from the brow furrowing, wait, could I maybe expense that if it's work-induced furrowing?
I guess I think about it too because of a sledding accident that happened when I was a kid. I fell off a sled and slid down a sheet of ice, taking most of the skin off one side of my face. My doctor told me plastic surgery may be necessary, but fortunately, I healed without a scar.
I'm not unhappy with how I look, but sometimes, the temptation to be just a bit better is out there.
But then I see the botched surgeries, like Tara Reid and Daryl Hannah, and suddenly, that spare tire looks good. Plus, as much as I'd like to look better, I know my insecurities will still be there post-surgery, so I need to focus on those first.
I don't judge those who do it, but thanks to Us Weekly and stars making bad decisions (cough, Joan Rivers, cough), the topic peeked my interest.
So, I guess the question for tonight, outside of what everyone is up to this weekend, is, would you ever have plastic surgery? If so, what would you have done? And if you did, do you think you'd be happier afterward?
Personally, I couldn't do it, even though I could use a tummy tuck! Everytime I watch Dr.90210 it scares the crap out of me!
ReplyDeleteThere are some things about me that I would not mind changing but I don't dislike them enough to have surgery. Well maybe a little botox to my forehead. Maybe when I am older I will get some tune up work but it all depends how good or bad i age.
ReplyDeleteI'd do it if I had the money!
ReplyDeletesometimes I want to get botox to prevent the lines in the middle of my forehead from looking like my mom's ....my husband is against it ...he is not against a boob job however. So, I guess the operation to choose if determined by a man would be the boobs.
ReplyDeleteI also think maybe a boob job at 40 wouldn't be too bad ....but I'm super scared of having weird bags of goo inside my body ...and what my body would do to said bags.
I too had ovarian cysts removed buy my scars are tiny ...did you have Laparoscopic?
I've thought about getting a nose job. My mother once apologized to me that I got my father's nose! Also, I've seriously contemplated getting breast implants. The main thing holding me back about that (believe it or not, it's not the money) is the fear of a botched surgery. Also, what happens when/if you take the implants out? Do you just have flaps of stretched out skin on your chest? Scary!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say no! Needles, surgery and things scare me, I love everything medical and that's probably why it scares me so much! Too many things can go wrong.
ReplyDeleteI can't even bring myself to do Lasik, even with a 95% or whatever % success rate it has. I'll deal with being blind as a bat for now! :)
Would but not for my eyes or lips or nose..maybe for making my thighs smaller, or make my face less chubbier. Definitely could use some of those helps since I'm bad at working out.
ReplyDeleteMy roomies and I were actually just discussing this last night and the consensus was that if we were to get ANYthing done, it'd be a boob lift. Not fakes, just a re-perkification of the girls. I don't think I'd ever actually have the balls to go through with it though. I don't like the idea of surgery at all, and you're right - your insecurities will still be there once the surgery's over.
ReplyDeletei'd consider a tummy tuck after i pop out a few spawn. that won't be for about a decade, though, so maybe by then it'll be free! here's hoping :)
ReplyDeleteI probably wouldn't have anything done.I'm deadly scared of surgery, and the only one I truly want,is Lasik for my eyes, that's all.
ReplyDeleteThe thing for me,is what you say about our insecurities. No matter how perfect surgery will make me look,I will always have image issues, and I'm sure even the prettiest girls in the world also have some insecurities.I think what I need, more than surgery,is to learn to love and accept myself.
Sometimes going under the knife just seems a lot easier though.
I would never have plastic surgery. I think society's obsession with bodily perfection is wrong anyway, and it's a lot more fulfilling to learn to accept yourself than to keep having plastic surgery. I mean, most breast implants have to be changed every so many years and often people need to have extra surgery because of scar tissue... So it's a definite no for me.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to do it, it would be a tummy tuck. I don't think I would consider it as an immediate fix becuase I actually like working out but it would be very nice to not have to worry about sucking in all the time. Far too scared of something bad happening though.
ReplyDeleteoh and I'm totally getting Lasik in 5-10 years. Waking up and being able to see immediately would be worth anything!
I've certainly thought about it. I will be having Lasik in the near future - although I'm not sure that's 'cosmetic' surgery at all.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted lipo on my chin. Haha. I hate my chin and feel that it's not nearly defined enough. Most people think I'm crazy but it is the part of me that bothers me the most. Not sure I'd ever actually do it but if it wasn't for money/healing time and pain/others opinions, I probably would have done it a while ago.
I wouldn't get plastic surgery. I'm too afraid of anything being botched and I'm fairly happy with how I look.
ReplyDeleteI used to be completely against plastic surgery in general. But now I'm softening to the idea of some types. Like breast reduction, I can completely understand that. The others, I don't know exactly how I feel. It varies from situation to situation that I hear about.
I agree that your insecurities will still be there afterwards, but sometimes it is still worth it to get surgery.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it counts but I had laser eye surgery so I could live without glasses. Technically you don't need it, so it's considered a cosmetic surgery. I was definitely happier after I got it, while my issues were still there, I did feel a bit better about myself. However I also didn't expect it to "cure" any of my issues. I went in with realistic expectations.
I think in the future if I had the money and a strong desire I might consider plastic surgery for other parts of my body. But I'd have to spend a long time thinking about it, that's for sure!
Plastic surgery scares me, because you never know what could go wrong. Plus the recovery period looks so painful and gross!
ReplyDeleteBut if I were to get something done, I'd get my nose fixed. I broke it as a kid, so it has this huge bump on it. But I wouldn't want the fake nose job looking nose. I'd just want the bump smoothed out.
i don't think plastic surgery would add anything of substance to my personal outlook on life.
ReplyDeleteit would just create a different perspective for others and their view of me.
i believe i was created exactly how God wanted me to be.
i would only go for surgery if i was involved in some sort of accident or something (out of my control) happened.
I wouldn't have it, but then again I'm a big whimp and wouldn't ever willingly go under the knife. Getting my teeth whitened is about as extreme as I get with that kind of stuff.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what I'd do...bye bye fatty hips and thighs. Even at the low end of the BMI scale my hips and thighs seem disproportionate (IMO) to the rest of my body.
ReplyDeleteThe scary thing is that I'm afraid that I'd like the results and then start wanting to suck out the rest of the "extra".
I worked for over a year as a surgical assistant to a plastic surgeon, so I think I have a pretty realistic idea of everything that's involved and what your expectations can be.
ReplyDeleteThere is some work I would get done.
And if you ever have questions, ask away, because I've totally held open boobs with skin hooks, etc.
I totally looked at the same photo gallery on Us yesterday at work and thought the same thing! Some of them are so scary. If I had money and wasn't super afraid of coming out like the scary ones, I'd totally get my bulbous nose toned down.
ReplyDeleteDid you hear what Stevie Nicks said about botox? Amazing:
"Botox is becoming the new face of beauty and it's unfortunate because it makes everybody look like Satan's children. Everybody has pointed eyebrows. Everybody looks related.
"If you're an unattractive girl who's trying to be beautiful with Botox, forget it. If you are a beautiful girl who's trying to be beautiful with Botox, you will look like you're angry all the time. You'd have to tie me down to get me to do it again."

ReplyDeleteEvery human activity has the potential for unfortunate results or side effects. Plastic surgery is no different.
ReplyDeleteMillions of plastic surgery procedures are done every year. We only hear about the "botches" because they are so rare. They make "news."
Nevertheless, there are two steps to take before committing, even emotionally, to plastic surgery.
First, insist on a free, private, confidential consultation with the surgeon before committing (you may do so with several surgeons before you decide.
Second, insist on seeing the surgeon's board certification in plastic surgery. Board certification in another specialty is not something to rely on for plastic surgery. (Most of the botches were done by under-qualified, "let's pretend" plastic surgeons) Also ask for photos of the surgeons previous work and references of previous patients.
Plastic surgery may not change your self-image. It could, however, change the way others see you. If that is important to you, you may want to investigate it.

I've sometimes thought about a nosejob or lipo but in the end I wouldnt want to be one of those messed up cases and be more unhappy with my appearence than I already am.
ReplyDeleteAfter I have kids, the boobs are getting lifted.
ReplyDeleteplastic surgery scares the crap out of me. i can't even watch shows about it i get so grossed out. so i'm guessing that i won't be getting anything done, at least not for a while.
ReplyDeleteNo thank you. I've seen people get addicted and Botoxed faces scare the hell out of me.

"Just a girl trying to find a balance between being a Shopaholic and a Saver."
I'm not opposed to plastic surgery and if I had the money I would have already had a nose job.
ReplyDeleteI would have Lasik eye surgery. Also, I have a severly deviated septum and my ENT is encouraging me to have surgery (b/c I get LOTS of sinus infections). He said they could fix the exterior of my nose (crooked w/ a small scar from being broken as a kid) at the same time. I'm seriously considering it b/c my insurance would pay for part of it. My mom had her eyelids done about 6 mos. ago and she looks fabulous! When I'm older, I'll consider doing that and a breastlift if I need it(I'm scared of implants though).
ReplyDeleteI've had LASIK and laser surgery to remove a few scars. If I get older and feel the need to get some work done I probably would.
ReplyDeleteI could definitely see myself getting botox or something. I certainly would not mind getting my boobs lifted either. After pregnancy, breastfeeding and seeing how I'm fast approaching 40, it would be nice.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I can see myself getting botox when I start to get wrinkles. But I'm afraid I would get addicted and turn out like Nicole Kidman - not able to make facial expressions. Hopefully, I'll resist the temptation.
ReplyDeleteI would totally have facial resurfacing done, but I don't know if that counts... I just thought of it because you mentioned scars, and I had such horrible skin for years, so I'd love to be rid of the acne scars.
ReplyDeleteAnd having been small up top my whole life, I used to consider implants, but I've decided that I'm not going to go there.
But if, by some awfulness, I get breast cancer and have to have the boobs taken away and if, by some goodness, I survive... I'll definitely bump the reconstructive implants up a size or so.
This is a tough one and I have seen the horrible pictures as well. I'd like to have surgery to fix the family nose and chin, but aside from that am very comfortable with how I look.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is for me. Who knows how I will feel 15 years from now. But I'm hoping that in that time we will have developed a pill or cream that we can use to instantly look like we are 12 again.
ReplyDeleteI'm not against making myself look a hell of a lot better, just don't know if I want to shoot poison in my face or have my ta-tas stuffed with plastic.
i would totally do it! a ton of my family members have had nose jobs and breast reductions, which is exactly what i would do, get rid of my big mamma bobbies!
ReplyDeleteI feel like there's more awful plastic surgery than good plastic surgery these days. Everybody takes it too far, half these people dont even look human anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, bad plastic surgery makes news. You go in and have a breast lift or a nose job or a tummy tuck that works uneventfully and no one knows or cares. Tells me that bad surgery is the rare bird. There's nothing to write about when things go good.
ReplyDeletemany people opt for plastic surgery. I agree with this because if we do old would be very useful. thanks for the info.

ReplyDeleteIf we watched shows featuring auto accidents, none of us would ever drive again.
ReplyDeleteThe secret to successful plastic surgery is the surgeon. Is s/he Board Certified? Experienced? Can you see what work was done for other patients? Can you talk to them?
The results will not resolve any deep-seated emotional problems. But I have seen women whose attitudes about themselves have been dramatically improved. More confidence usually leads to more success.
And most surgeons will give you a free, no obligation consultation before any surgery is recommended let alone done.
Here’s something that might help you make a decision – some people get plastic surgery done not just to look better, but also as a necessity, or for some medical reasons. Plastic surgery can definitely improve your looks, but it can also help get rid of unsightly blemishes and scars that you don’t want to see. Some people get it as an enhancement, while others get it done as an improvement. What you want is corrective plastic surgery, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.
