Wow. I had a lot of people ask me about my date so here is the official post/recap. Sorry to keep you guys waiting!
It kills me to say this but my date Saturday night with JohnBoy gets a B grade. Maybe it was an off night for us both and it had been a week since we saw each other and he just got back a day earlier from his trip, but something seemed....off.

Rather than have a big date production this time (sorry no picnics in the park,) we opted for a more laid back date: dinner and a movie.
And as per usual, I was insanely nervous before we went out, pacing and wondering, "WTF am I doing?"
Yes, I'm still a little insecure. But I'm the kind of person who obsesses and gets super nervous before a date and then when it starts, I'm totally fine. It's all my neurosis about the build up. And because it was over a week since we really saw each other, the beginning of the date was a little awkward, getting comfortable with one another again.
So anyhow, back to the movie, which is honestly why I think the date vibe was a little...off. Because I'm a movie buff and have movie buff friends, I've seen the majority of the new releases so that left slim pickings behind for a date. So we settled on The Proposal and I felt pretty secure in that choice....until we arrived and found out it was sold out. Shit. So that left.....Ice Age or Bruno.
Please guess what the answer was........still waiting.......oh come on you know the answer......Bruno.
Here's what we were thinking: "Hey yeah that'll be fine we both agree, we know what we're getting into, hey it won't be too awful."
O-M-G. No it wasn't awful, parts of it were actually really funny, but the sex and constant male anatomy on the screen definitely....killed the mood a little bit. I wanted him to hold my hand, but when two guys are ball gagged in bed on the screen, that doesn't say, "aww look how romantic this moment is." That's more for when they're wearing harnesses (KIDDING!)
So after a few post movie awkward pauses and some awkward laughter, it was dinner time, where I hoped alcohol would me loosen up. And it did. Wine always delivers for me.
We went to Bandera, which was awesome and as always, he was a perfect gentleman, telling me how nice I looked and holding doors, helping guide me through the crowd. But I still think the movie buzzkilled any romance for the date because there was no hand holding, arm around the shoulder or anything. I was a little disappointed, but maybe that's a sign for me to be more forward.
And after paying a ridiculous amount in parking to drive me home (instead of me taking the bus home), the evening ended with a few hugs and kisses.
Now I'm bummed I won't see him for over a week because of BlogHer and work stuff coming up, but he said when I'm done, he'll take me out to celebrate.
That, I can't wait for.
So I guess I learned a few things from this date: yes, I want to see him again and we've already made plans to see another, funnier movie together, and that while I definitely respect him for taking it slow with me, it's time for me to take the lead on a few things.
Have you ever had these awkward moments on a date? How do you overcome them? And yes, we're still e-mailing so everything is good. But I need some PDA action :)
Wow. Bruno. That kind of leaves me...well, speechless.
ReplyDeleteWow, you certainly are brave to pick Bruno. Hopefully, the next date will go a little better!
ReplyDeleteBruno! EGADS!
ReplyDeleteKidding. At least it ended well!
As for awkward moments...oh man, Steve is going to KILL me for this one. Well after Steve took me to his friends' big graduation party (keg party, bonfire, out in the middle of the woods, BEEEEER), we realized a two-hour drive home for me was kind of ridiculous, so he offered me to stay at his place. We'd been seeing each other for a month or so, no biggie, hadn't gotten down and dirty yet though. So we stumble into his apartment, pretty drunk, and passed out in his bed. It was super innocent, not even a kiss. Annnnnnnnnnyways, sometime in the middle of the night, I turned (I'm fully clothed, okay) to cuddle him and my hand rest on...well....his business. Apparently, forgetting completely that I was in the same bed, he had stripped, as he usually did when he slept alone. Needless to say, it startled the hell out of him and he fell right off the bed, completely naked. AWKWARD! But we laughed it off.
Btw, you didn't hear that story from me!
ReplyDeleteOh no, Bruno!?! Awkward..
ReplyDeletebut at least it wasn't a deal breaker, I'm sure the next date will go much better. And you always overcome awkward moments/situations by laughing at them. Even if it means laughing at yourself.
argh! this is frustrating even for me! i feel like i should start singing "just kiss the girl" from the little mermaid, only substitute "boy" for "girl"...and you get the picture. i'm not a good singer either, so i would help the mood about as much as bruno did.
ReplyDeletejust laugh and learn. and get yourself all over him next time! i want some juicy action, haha
ice age :) it was great!
ReplyDeleteand i'm happy to hear you and him are having a great time!
you want some PDA action? do you know how to cook?? invite him over for dinner at your place. cook him a meal... you can relax in your own environment snuggle and kiss all night long!!
One of my clients went to see Bruno with her date last week and she did inform me that it totally killed the mood for them, too! I should have warned you...
ReplyDeleteAwkwardness will always be there when you're first dating. The only way to overcome it is to keep seeing each other and be yourself; practice makes perfect, yes? You will be fine :)
WOW I can't imagine how awkward the movie must have been! The date doesn't sound terrible though, so I'd definitely keep things going and see what happens. Maybe you'll both be a little more brave next time? :)
ReplyDeleteChock the experience of the movie as something to laugh at. Sounds like you already have another date secured. Just make sure the next movie is something you want to see and consider buying tickets ahead of time on Fandango or something like that. Or perhaps make it a blockbuster night?
ReplyDeleteWait, what good man compliments a woman's looks? I find that a fault, actually.
ReplyDeleteSorry the date was a B. These things happen, which is why you should be dated a BUNCH of guys.
LOL, I thought it was disturbingly hilarious. :D
ReplyDeleteBruno would definitely be a bit of a romance kill!!! I liked how you guys went to the movie first and then to dinner...that sounds a lot better than going to dinner first.
ReplyDeleteAs for how to deal with awkward moments on a date, your guess is as good as mine! If you figure it out, let me know!
Yeah, Bruno would kill any sort of romantic notions. Here's hoping the next one is better. =)
ReplyDeleteI feel you about the movie, to be honest i kinda cringed when you said it's Bruno. It gave awkward vibes to people. Just like when you watch True Blood during first or second dates :P
ReplyDeleteI hope the next one is totally sweeping you off your feet.:)
Wow- yea Bruno could make things awkward! lol I've been kinda staving that one off in the hopes that Mister and I can watch it at home later on.
ReplyDeleteAs for the awkward moments, I just try to smile or laugh through them. While you guys are getting to know each other they will happen - our awkward moments are some of the funniest, sweetest moments in our relationship.
No comment on the movie choice. I think I would've skipped the movie part altogether and just gone for dinner and drinks. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
ReplyDeletePDA? Have you confirmed he's ok with that? Because not everyone is cool with it. I know I'd likely reject a guy (no matter how much I like him) if he went in for some tongue action in front of others. So, just make sure your expectations are inline with what he's comfortable doing!
Awkward moments? Uh, yeah. Try going on a second (or was it third?) date with a guy you met on Match.com to a comedy show. Sounds innocent, right? It is until the guy starts making sexual jokes, which had I been dating the guy longer (or really cared about him at all) would have been funny, but since I was on the end phase of my feelings toward him, the jokes were just uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteLesson learned: never go to comedy shows unless you like the person you're going with :-)
Glad to hear that despite the odd moments, you're still going strong with JohnBoy!
I think the fact that you had some awkward moments during this date is perfectly normal, things are still fresh and new between you guys.
ReplyDeleteNow that that's all out of the way, I'm sure it'll provide great laughs for your next date and, hopefully, things will begin to take off from there.
I am the same exact way with the whole get nervous before but not during thing. Stupid anticipatory anxiety!
ReplyDeleteSounds like the date went better than you think, but then again - I wasn't there, haha.
And YES, when you get back and go out with him again, I'd go for it!
Yeah, I can see how Bruno would make it awkard and it sounds like it's all ok now, right? Grab his hand or go for a smooch in public. You got to take the lead sometimes, you know?
ReplyDeleteJESSICA! After I WARNED you last week?!
ReplyDeleteI think at this point on the dating spectrum, it's completely understandable to still be battling nerves. It's part of what contributes to the excitement!! I'm sorry the date was awkward, but it sounds like he's ready to give it another shot and I can't wait to hear about the next date!
ReplyDeleteOh, Bruno. My husband and I didn't know what to say to each other after we saw it, and we've been together for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI've been exactly the same with my current guy, in that i feel unbelievably nervous beforehand but the minute i meet him i'm at ease. Like I said in a previous comment, I don't know what's going to happen there, but the fact I feel at ease once I see him can only be a good thing. Normally i'm CONSTANTLY nervous.
ReplyDeleteBut I'll perhaps remember to give Bruno a miss in terms of date material... :)
Oh gosh, I am laughing but WITH YOU. Laughing with you. I would imagine Bruno would be hard to sit through with someone you are still getting to know. Sounds to me like all is well (still emailing, already have plans, etc), it was just an awkward movie moment.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of still feeling awkward and neurotic, I am the SAME DAMN WAY. You are not alone, sister. :)
Hey, you guys could always go see Harry Potter? Hee. Let us know when you start reading the series. ;)
I totally agree. It took Mr. Simple three dates before I even got a peck! I finally had to jump in and take the lead.
ReplyDeletei KNEW bruno was bad news!! but jess, that still sounds like an amazing date! for real, i'm glad it's going well : )
ReplyDeleteBruno does look horrible. I won't even see it on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteBut it does sound like you two have a great date besides a bad movie.
well if you can take seeing Bruno together I bet you can handle a lot of things. I know what you mean about the buzzkill, though. Glad that you have future plans with him AND that you are excited to see him again. Both very good signs =)
ReplyDeleteIf someone can't laugh at bruno then they're no friend of mine. I think it's a good way to weed out the ones w/o a sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteOMG I am IN THE AIR FLYING TO CHICAGO LITERALLY AS I TYPE. OMG.
ReplyDeleteSounds like things are going well for you! ;) Keep us updated...
ReplyDeleteI totally understand about those movies...but hey you have a story! ;)
