"I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright, and I pity any girl who isn't me tonight!" (Yes, I still sing this out loud from time to time)
In college, I would go try on prom or formal dresses because it was fun to play dress up and pretend that I had glamorous places to wear these dresses to on a regular basis. Plus, who doesn't like to put on a pretty dress, nice pair of shoes and jewelry every once in a while? It's like playing with life-size Barbies, except you're the Barbie :)
I bring this up because during Thanksgiving I stumbled upon a formal, black-tie event dress I bought during college. At the height of poverty, I walked into the former Marshall Fields and went to play dress up in the women's department after an awful day at class. I came across a long, black detailed dress with crushed velvet paisley pattern (trust me, it's gorgeous) and would stare at myself in a full-length mirror for awhile, admiring how gorgeous I looked. Then, I finally bought it and never wore it. The tags are still on it, but I had to have it because when I tried it on, it looked like it was painted on me.
And trying it on again recently made me smile because five years later, it still fit pretty well (although a few more days at the gym would help) and it still looks great. It needs altering at the hem, but it still looks good :)
So here's me in my latest dress up adventure in the above mentioned black dress. The picture isn't great (or overly flattering) because I'm sandwiched in my parents office, trying to take the picture in the mirror, but I think you get the idea.
Does anyone else still play dress up? It doesn't have to be with a full gown, even sometimes dressing up in shoes or jewelry to sit around the house is fun!
Uhm. I TOTALLY play dress up.
ReplyDeleteOooo I'm liking the dress!
ReplyDeleteI play dress up when I'm out shopping. I'll grab the most ridiculous dresses that I'd never have the guts to wear and try them on in the fitting room. A twirl here and a flip there and it's off and back on the rack in a jiffy.
I love ANY excuse to dress up. I had a ton of fun trying on dresses for my mom's wedding later this month and would have bought several of them if I could. I would be a happy girl if I had a calendar full of special events for which I could dress up!
ReplyDeleteMy stepmom told me that sometimes she puts on the tiara she wore at her wedding while she works around the house.
In high school I went to the formal dances as often as I could, even going alone or with a guy friend just to have the chance to dress up and wear jewelry.
If I lived in Chicago we would so go dress shopping together--it's always better when you have someone to zip you up!
Um, I ALWAYS play dress up.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of, I'm going to a Christmas Ball for school tomorrow, so I'll definitely be playing dress up for a couple hours deciding what to wear!
TOTALLY still play dress up. It's such a nice and easy pick me up.
ReplyDeleteOh Yes Ma'am. I do!!
ReplyDeleteIs it part of being a girl???
I love your dress by the way!!
I'm currently unemployed and will look for any excuse to play dress up! I went to my in-laws on Sunday and got all excited about an otherwise uneventful trip so I could wear my dark wash jeans and red ballerina flats. The other day I went to the grocery store and spent a half hour putting on makeup and a light red lipstick. It was so fun. Ridiculous but fun.
ReplyDeleteI like to wear my highest, sexiest heels around the apartment to break them in more. Then they're more comfortable when I actually do wear them out!
ReplyDeleteI love to play dress up too. I think I enjoy it more living alone, because I can dress up even more ridiculous and have twice the fun.
ReplyDeleteOh wow with the gown!
ReplyDeleteI love playing dress up - I've recently been coaxing Mister into taking pictures of my little outfits so I can look at them afterwards.
Cause I'm REALLY lame! lol
i was raised by my dad so frilly girly things where not around. i'd put on his hunting camo and stomp around in his boots and play like i was in the woods.
ReplyDeleteto this day i can not stand to be in anything that is not camo or jeans w/ a tshirt.
it drives me insane to have to "dress nice" at work --i feel like a stupid idiot when i put on "nice" clothes.
this weekend is the holiday party for Joe's work and i'm freakin out over here!!! i'm not a girly girl!
Heck yeah! I can't say I do it as much as I used to (I would get bored back when I lived with my parents and put together outfits etc) but ohh yes. And it's fun!
ReplyDeleteI dress up to go shopping too. People treat you waaaay better. A former friend actually got pissed at me once because she had bought an expensive ring from a jewelry store and they treated her like crap. They had forgot to give her a ring box and she was too scared to be treated like that again, so I went up and asked for a box and they treated me like I was their best customer.
Guilty.
ReplyDeleteIt's so much better playing dress up as an adult when you have boobs are able (mostly) to walk in the shoes!
Have you ever played dress up with wedding dresses? It's a lot of fun, especially when the bride-to-be convinces the attendant that it's YOU who is getting married...
ReplyDeleteNope. I always dislike the having to get undressed, dressed in other clothes, undressed and dressed in normal clothes again. It's such a hassle.
ReplyDeletePlaying dress up is all part of the fun!
ReplyDeleteSometimes my friends and I go to the mall just to try on various things we would never buy. And occassionally I do that at home too with things I haven't worn for a long time.
I do. I love an excuse to get dressed up. And do my makeup differently. Dressing up, it's fun. And it's not just for kiddies.
ReplyDeletexxo
My fiancee always dresses up when we get back from shopping. She calls it "Fashion show," which I think is pretty damn cute.
ReplyDeleteI know, that was an incredibly cheesy and gag-worthy comment.
You don't just feel pretty, you are Pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteI definitely play dress up. I'll get an idea for an outfit and have to go try it on, or I buy a new pair of shoes and have to try on every outfit that looks good with them. I'm obsessed!
ReplyDeleteUm, whenever I go shopping I buy about 1% of what I try on. That's the glory of shopping!
ReplyDeleteSometimes, my best friend and I will go to the mall and pretend like we're back in high school looking for a prom dress.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I like dress up better than regular shopping!
Playing dress up is always fun!
ReplyDeleteYou look awesome in that dress :)
I love dressing up! That's my favorite part of going out. I rarely wear jeans and my friends always make fun of me for wearing heels everywhere and going to the store dressed up, but I don't care.
ReplyDeleteoh what a cute dress!
ReplyDeleteand i definitely still play dress up, i put on a dress last night that i have never word. granted it was to make sure it still fit and i could rock it saturday night, but still, haha.
Looks pretty good! You should find yourself a guy in a tux then act snooty to all us normal people
ReplyDeleteYou are adorable!! And my favorite thing to do in stores is try on the hideous feathery, bedazzled formal gowns--so hilariously fun!
ReplyDeleteOMG I totally love playing dress up!! Especially when I buy new stuff I try it on with everything in my closett and some of the stuff the rest of the family calls their own!
ReplyDeleteOh and the girls and I also go chearng up shopping every once in a while. We than try on the most ridiculous stuff and laugh our a** off about each other! Best way of chearing one up and it works every time!
Sorry for the misspellings but I am at school and have no english spell checking program here!
My mom and I play all the time when I'm home--we love to check out my old prom dresses!
ReplyDeleteOh completely.
ReplyDeleteBefore I moved out I tried on alllllllll the dresses I wore to high school dances and stuff. And took pictures.
Hell yeah. My fav is when me and my friends go into formal stores, just for the hell of it. Or make ourselves try on awful things with ruffles and tassles.
ReplyDeleteYup, I play dress up. I'm so glad everyone else does it too :-)
ReplyDeletePlaying dress up is soooo much fun! I still do it too.
ReplyDeletebeautiful dress
