Key Learnings and hot man bus fail

Since I'm one of the few people I know without HBO, I couldn't watch the Obama We are One concert today (sniff sniff) so I'm relaxing after a nice dinner with friends and preparing for work tomorrow (even though our office is closed.) Oh and I need to bring out my Obama buttons for Tuesday too!

So to help delay me from doing something productive, let's bask in some key learnings together.

Key Learnings:
  • Friday fish fries are the perfect way to close a long week
  • Tequila served out of a plastic test tube will make you feel like throwing up
  • Beer tastes good but can give you a wicked headache the next day (not good)
  • When smuggling in candy to a movie theater, avoid food that makes too much noise when opening it so you don't draw attention to yourself
  • There are some ugly fur coats on Michigan Avenue
  • Grocery shopping when hungry is a bad idea
  • Don't sit next to the man rocking back and forth in his seat on the bus, you never know what he'll do next
  • Even if a guy says, "This may not come out right but I mean it as a compliment," whatever he says next will be mean
  • Telling a woman she's wearing a "grandma sweater" is not a good conversation starter, same with telling her friend that she looks like a lesbian cartoon character
  • Beer + good 80s music = dance party in public. I love 80s music
  • On bitter cold days, CTA bus tracker (which calculates when bus routes will be at your stop) is a godsend
  • Friday Night Lights on NBC is one of the best shows on TV. Everyone should watch it and bask in the hotness of Coach Taylor. Meow

Hot man/bus fail
It has been a long time since I saw a guy who was so attractive that I literally couldn't look away. Sure, there are celebs that I think are very attractive, but not in a sense that when you see them, you can't help but stare at them (in a non-creepy way.) The last time I had that feeling was with a guy in Minnesota...which was....several years ago.

I found myself in a "non-creepy stare" situation on Saturday while I was on my way to see Slumdog Millionaire (great movie). I was sitting on the bus, listening to my iPod, when I looked over and saw a guy, maybe around my age, standing near the back exit. And I have to say, he was the most attractive man I've seen in a while. Like, I could not take my eyes off of him because seeing him sparked a little flutter in my chest. Now I wasn't staring at him like a piece of raw meat, but I dare to say, he was semi-tall, dark and handsome.

And in true me fashion, I didn't take a picture (don't have a camera on my work BB) and while trying to tweet/stare at him, he suddenly jumped off the bus near Tiffany's (is that a sign?) and disappeared in the crowd. I actually thought for a moment that I made him up.

So while it was disappointing and a half-fail that I didn't get to wave or say something to him, I have to say that the reminder that a guy can cause the long-thought-dead flutter in my chest to reappear, is a start. And right now, I'll take what I can get.

Photo Sunday:
En route to the movie, I saw the biggest icicle that I've ever seen and, of course, was compelled to take a picture of it. Enjoy!

How was everyone else's weekend. See any good movies or did everyone hibernate because it's "warmer" but not actually warm?

  1. That's a HUGE icicle!
    Jeez.
And, I actually went out quite a bit yesterday to bask in the above zero weather. But, now I'm sick, so I'm back to hibernation until I've gotta go back to real life on Tuesday.
Glad your weekend was so nice :)

  2. "Is that a sign?" That made me smile - what a welcome addition to your commute! I mostly have semi-homeless people and scene girls, none of which as as much fun.

Crazy icicle! I would definitely stay well back from that!

  3. I literally hibernated ALL weekend, and it was fabulous!

Boo to the hot bus guy for disappearing so quickly.

Oh, and I always smuggle food into the movie theater...haha I usually try to open all my stuff before the movie begins though...the cracking of a soda can is so loud!

  5. crazy icicle! they scare me when they get too big like that one.

i spent my weekend mostly indoors, still trying to imagine myself on a tropical beach somewhere instead of in damn chicago, in this damn cold weather. i did manage to go see Defiance the holocaust movie with daniel craig. i was surprised at how much i liked it. but i should have waited til it was at the cheap theatres.

  6. ha, i didn't touch the outside air all weekend. it was my last weekend to eat whatever i wanted and just enjoy laying around, so i previewed some, um, online versions of new movies...

i watched the clint eastwood movie "gran torino," which was fantastic. a really touching and honest movie, despite all the racial slurs and crude language/attitudes. it all fit into the plot and was never out of line.

i started watching slumdog, but i couldn't stand the thickness of it, as my gecko died the other day, so i'm saving that for a lighter day.

  7. "Friday fish fries are the perfect way to close a long week" that is one thing you don't see here in Colorado, it is so sad.

  8. Honestly, Kyle Chandler (Coach Taylor) had not aged for the past
    ...20 years? Almost scary!!

Awe Jess, too bad you didn't get to exchange a smile with the guy, but you never know, you may see him again!!

    Stay warm!!!

  9. I don't have HBO, either. And fur coats only look good on their original owners. People who wear them have cold, dead hearts.

My husband is going to Jamaica in the morning. I hate him a little bit right now.

  10. Slumdog was pretty awesome :)

I shall now hibernate for another day in preparation for what I'm sure will be a wonderful Tuesday.

  13. I hibernated all weekend... but that's because I was really sick and trying very hard not to pass out while walking. My friends saw Slumdog Millionaire... but since I was sick I didn't see it. :(

  14. I wish Philly had that bus tracker thing. It would really improve my quality of life.

I totally sneak food into the movie theater, too. I think theaters ask for it because they charge so much. And we wonder why we're in an economic crisis.

  15. I love 80s dance parties!

I'm thinking about breaking down and getting HBO and TiVo at the same time. Not looking forward to the sizeable increase in my cable bill when that happens though.

  16. i'm hibernating today and couldn't be happier.

we JUST added HBO to our cable plan earlier this month and it has been well-worth the extra $10.

  17. I don't have HBO either :( I cannot wait for tomorrow. Grocery shopping while hungry is a bad idea - a mistake that I unfortunately make all too often.

  18. It warmed up to 43 degrees yesterday, and we celebrated by firing up the grill AFTER DARK when it dropped to 28.

    No dance party, though.

  19. I went shopping while hungry and ended up with Hostess cupcakes. And ice cream. Not only do I buy more, I buy more shit!

  20. I can't believe it took you 29 years to learn that tequila from a plastic test tube would make you want to throw up :) Call me crazy but I think that would be assumed...or maybe that's just a New York thing ;o)

By the way, what did mean guy say that wasn't really a compliment but was?

  21. I love beer and 80s music!

We went to see Last Chance Harvey yesterday afternoon with the rest of the AARP crowd. It was cute.

  22. Wow I would like to climb that icicle! Weekend sucked had a cold, sucks living on a hot boat and having the flu!

  23. We've seen some sketchy looking icicles like that, too. I'm sure it does wonders for the gutters...

This weekend, we ventured outside thinking it was warmer than it was. It was still cold, but the dog enjoyed the run!

  24. aaaahh! even reading about alcohol in any form is freakin' out my stomach.

that's what I get for getting smashed last night.

  25. Man, I love a Friday fish fry. One of the best things about living in/near northern Illinois/Wisconsin.

  26. See I haven't been going outside but that's because it's so fricken hot I melt. Sorry. Don't hate me please.

PS I LOVE gorgeously hot guys you can't tear your eyes away from. Totally makes my day.

  27. sometimes i think 80s music is the only music!

  28. Awesome photo! And, don't worry - no one ever has the guts to talk to the hot stranger! We just stare and watch him walk away. Sigh.
