Weekend recap: True Blood and No Doubt

Happy Sunday! First, I cannot believe BlogHer is two weeks away, um where did summer go? I'm so excited about it and spending time with some of my awesome bloggy friends.

Well let's get started with the weekend recap!

Red Wine and Vampires
Because I don't have HBO (stupid cable companies), I don't get to watch and enjoy the "cool" shows, like True Blood, so Friday I met up with Sarah and Liz to indulge in this guilty pleasure with pizza and red wine (or beer for me). To be fair, I was pretty beat after a long day at work, so my mood may have been off but the show was...meh okay. Sookie kind of got on my nerves.

I may be tarred and feathered for these comments, but from what I've seen of the show, I give it a C. Maybe it has to just grow on me more.

NO DOUBT!!!!
I don't talk a lot about music here because well, I'm not very "cool" when it comes to music. I like my iPod classic rock mixes and mostly mainstream hits. I don't know a lot of indie/alt rock bands and I would be awful to have on your musical trivia team. Honest.

But like everyone else, I have 2-3 bands that I go ape-sh*t crazy for, and one of them is No Doubt.

No, not Gwen Stefani via Hollaback Girl, I'm talking about No Doubt, her group before she came a solo star.

I have fond high school memories of Tragic Kingdom, dancing along to "Just a Girl" and screaming (privately) "F*CK YES I AM" along with those lyrics. Yes, there is a little punk/ska girl buried behind my preppy/clean cut exterior. I still daydream about dying my hair pink or wearing a crapload of heavy make up for no reason than to show I'm pissed off and rebelling against "the man."

So when I heard No Doubt was going on tour this summer, for the first time in almost seven years, I nearly lost my mind with excitement. But my indecisive nature kept me from doing anything because the venue was in the suburbs...and I have no car. FAIL. But after some very good blog karma, I got a ride thanks to Rachel and her friends and a ticket off of Craigslist for a very good price. I even got to see Molly there too! Hey, hey Chicago bloggers represent.

As you can see, everyone was excited to be there (I'll be wearing that next time)

And with the help of a 22 oz. beer (which I could legally buy, as opposed to last time I saw No Doubt), I was a screaming, dancing, hip-shaking, arms waiving, jumping up and down fool. For real. You would have been SHOCKED by my actions, given that I'm a pretty reserved, laid back person. My hips were shakin' like Shakira on a good day.

I love you Gwen!!

Oh and the girl I bought the ticket from, yeah we got upgraded VIP seats from a drawing we entered at the venue on a whim. I completely had a holy-shit-I-think-I-might-pass-out moment. And I got to see Gwen really close, and scream my love for her. GREAT NIGHT.

Fall into the Gap
Oh and my final piece of good news for this weekend, I found out I was selected to be a Gap brand enthusiast from Brand About Town. My super awesome "Born to Blog" shirt that the other ladies have been posting pictures of isn't here yet :( but my inner event planner is out in full force getting logistics set up for the party. I'll keep everyone posted on the details!

How was everyone else's weekend? Anything fun or exciting happen? Or what performer/band would you LOVE to go see if you had the chance?

I am SO excited that 500 Days of Summer comes out next weekend. I have already texted TC to discuss getting tickets.

Note: Thank you everyone for your sweet comments about my second date with JohnBoy. Really you guys are so sweet and I'll definitely keep you posted about date #3!! We've been texting while he is on vacation so we're staying in touch :)

So fun that you got to see No Doubt. I could have written the part about dancing around to Tragic Kingdom and being a little punk/ska inside the clean-cut exterior. I laughed out loud because I did the SAME EXACT thing. It is exactly how I felt when I did a semi-drunken rendition of Don't Speak at a VFW karaoke night recently. But let's keep that between you and me, m'kay?

LOL Please wear one of those mini-kilts and braid your pigtails like that next time, it would make me so happy.

Glad you had an amazing time! I'm not even sure I'd know what to do with myself if I saw them!

How lucky, getting an upgrade! Woooo! That is very exciting. I have never seen True Blood, ever. Congrats on being chosen a Gab Brand enthusiast. Sounds like a great weekend!

True Blood is the awesomesauce! I loved it from the first episode, but I guess you just have to give it time to grow on you, hah.

And I've always wanted to see No Doubt live. Totally jealous :P

Cheers!

Glad you had fun at No Doubt! "Spiderwebs" was totally my anthem in junior high.

I've never seen True Blood, but it looks a little dark for my taste (ew, is that a weird thing to say when describing vampire drama?). My friends are really into it now, so I have a feeling I'll be seeing an episode or two soon.

Congrats on becoming a Gap Brand Enthusiast! That's so exciting!

I really do like True Blood, but only really late at night when I can't sleep at my parents' house. We don't get cable, so it's my indulgence over there, but I have several shows I'll run through on demand before that one.

No doubt? Wooooow! The pics look sick. I so envy you right now.

Anyway on True Blood I'm torn between loving it and sometimes hating it. I just think some sex scenes are way forced to be squeezed in an episode just to make it look so controversial or something. And yeah I'm not big on Sookie too. She's like a bimbo in a weird accent.

... I am so jealous right now.

I'm not a huge No Doubt fan, but I am impressed with Gwen Stefani's celebrity parenting (i.e., she actually parents) and her kick-ass, post-2 babies body. I want me one of those!

I am not really into vampires myself. True Blood doesn't really interest me.

Concert looks like a blast. I went to a No Doubt concert seriously like 12 years ago and I still remember how much fun I had.

I would give True Blood a C, too. At first I was willing to give it a chance. But I only made it through about six episodes before I decided I was wasting my time. It's a crappy adaptation of the books (which I love) and not that good of a show on it's own merits.

I always harbored a secret desire to be kind of punk/goth, too. I even tried to buy black lipstick once, but the store I went to was all out and I decided that was a sign. I did have bright red streaks in my hair for awhile, though.

well...i'm all out of tar, and my next shipment of feathers hasn't arrived yet, so i'll just have to substitute honey and...strawberry slices. this could get sexy...haha

nah, i love true blood, but i agree, ALL of the characters get on my nerves at one point or another. especially jason.

glad you had fun at the concert!

I do like the show... but it took a bit to grow on me. And the show is MUCH darker (and very different..) from the books. Which I do prefer. The books are actually quite hilarious, and while Sookie can get annoying at times, I feel that she's a stronger character in the novels than she is in the show.

But please don't let the show turn you off of starting the series. I promise you're in for a treat. Especially once you get to know Eric Northman a little better (drool...swoon). Eric makes Edward Cullen look like Jon Lovitz.

I would die and go to music heaven if I got to see Elton John and Billy Joel perform together. They used to tour together all the time but I never had the money (or the sense) to get tickets!

No Doubt would be awesome to see as well though!

I saw No Doubt a few weeks ago- couldn't agree more! Felt like I was in heaven.... and was slightly blinded by those amazing abs. I don't even have children and mine are pathetic- I kind of wanted to drop down and do crunches in the middle of the concert....

Okay, so I know not EVERYONE is as obsessed with True Blood as I (and many others!) are, but I would say give it a bit more time. I thought it was THE weirdest show at first (and I mean, it is), but it grew on me and now I can't get enough.

And I love No Doubt too! I saw them years ago at Universal and they were just fantastic. Sounds like an incredible night!

Me too! About The Gap. Not No Doubt. But I would have danced like a fool, too, just so you know.

"No Doubt" is definitely one of my FAVORITE bands of all time. They're definitely "IT" band for our generation ten years ago. And my husband knows one of them :)

Cool post!!!

Gah. No Doubt brings me WAY back. They were my favorite band for a LONG time, and I am incredibly jealous you got to see them!

It makes me sad that you weren't impressed by True Blood, but my boyfriend won't even watch five minutes of it with me without throwing a hissy fit because it's "gross" or "weird" or "too bloody." C'est la vie. And to each his own. (:

I do heart me some No Doubt. Missed them in St. Louis though.

But I'm excited for your Gap promotion! I want to know what kind of things you do for a Gap party - try things on? Shop? Make virtual models on computers?

I pretty much jumped up and down for the full two hours as well! AH! I <3 NO DOUBT! I wanna see all your pix! :)

I saw 500 days of summer last night. (Please don't hate me.) And I seriously want to see it again!

How amazing was the No Doubt show?! They were in Montreal almost exactly a month ago, and I'm still going crazy about how absolutely amazing the entire thing was. The set?! The sound!? THEM!! I think they should keep touring... and coming back... They're such a timeless band!
