Things that scare me

I'm not a scardey cat, but there are a few things that scare the sh*t out of me. My friends find many of these items amusing so I figured that I'd open up the shame to everyone else!

Here are the things I'm scared of:
  • Mice - My stepmom and I have the same reaction when we see mice, we scream and run for high ground. Until mice start climbing stairs, I will find refuge from them on another floor
  • Pigeons - Especially city pigeons. I've said this before, but they scare the crap out of me. When they come uncomfortably close to me, I scream like a girl and hide behind the person walking next to me. Yes, I look crazy
  • Bees - Speaking of crazy, I also look crazy when these little bastards come around. I will do the absolute wrong thing and swat at them, squealing like a baby and running away. It's amazing I've haven't been stung more
  • Grates - I'm terrified of catching a heel in a grate (like JLo in Wedding Planner) or it breaking while I walk over one. I never walk over them if I can help it. When it bounces, it makes me very nervous.
  • Sharks - Thanks to Jaws, I'm terrified of any body of water, including a bathtub and swimming pool. Showers so far have proven to be safe
  • Bats - In Minnesota, I woke up one morning with a bat flying around my room. I won't lie, I thought I would die of rabies. I wasn't bitten by it but still, it still haunts me
  • Unattended dogs - I don't care how well behaved they are, if I see a dog leashless or unattended, I panic mildly, thinking it will tear off my face. Most times dogs are very well behaved in the city, but there are a few with negligent owners who ruin this
So what I have learned from this list? I am a total sissy. S-I-S-S-Y.

What are you afraid of? I can't be alone in some of these fears.

SNAKES.

I am so, so, so scared of snakes. I actually had a nightmare last night that one was about to bite me and I couldn't get away. So horrible.

I have a horrible fear of cornfields. While its not so much of an issue now that I live in the city, growing up in Northwest Indiana was a bit of a challenge during the growing season :)

Completely 155% with you on the bees. I will go running and screaming like a manic lunatic if they come within 10 feet of me. I've also been stung about 5 bazillion times (the last time while TRYING to make peace with the bastards) and am grossly allergic (swelling only so far). bleh bees.

PS. I am originally from Chi town. It rocks! :)

Zombies. no joke. I am afraid of Zombies. And the dark. I can not be in the dark especially alone in the dark. I literally have nightlites in every room of the house.

"critters/bugs" get to me like snakes, spiders, mice, etc. but not as much as the Dark or Zombies.

I'm scared of frogs. I had a dream- nightmare really- that I was surrounded by thousands of them and they were jumping up my legs. I get creeped out just thinking about it. And when I was around 14, a little kid we used to camp with caught one, not knowing I had this irrational fear, shoved it in my face until I was almost bawling. Everyone laughed until they realized I was actually afraid.

Needles of any variety. I avoid the doctor to the best of my abilities as a result.

Also...I have a completely ridiculous fear of being broken into while I'm in the shower. I think it's the completely vulnerable/nowhere to run thing, but honestly? Probably not so likely that I need to bother dead-bolting the door before I lather, rinse, and repeat.

I'm with you on the mice and grace. I would also like to add snakes....I get shivers up and down my spine just thinking about them.

Centipedes.
Oh my goodness, they are terrifying!

Joey said...

Oh goodness I am afraid of a lot. A lot.
here's my top 3:
bears, cougars (aka mountain lions), and sharks
I also don't like unattended dogs. I almost cried earlier this year when a Schnauzer running loose in the neighbourhood was following me around, yapping and nipping at my heels. The thing (albeit I'm sure scared little thing) wouldn't let me cross the street to go home to my apartment. It sounds silly, but I've never had a dog and was at a loss of what to do.

I, too, am terrified of sharks. I wouldn't even go on the Jaws ride at Universal Studios! My husband thought it was hilarious and bought me a bookmark with a shark on it. Great, thanks.

I was listening to Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me and they were interviewing the guy who, in the 1970s, walked across a wire strung between the Twin Towers in NYC. They asked him if he was afraid of anything. His response? Anything with not enough legs or too many legs. I concur. Snakes and spiders, specifically!

Also, I have a dog. I've had dogs for the past 7 years. I love dogs. And, yet, if I see an unattended dog I steer clear. I worry that the dog has an owner out there looking for it, but I'm always worried that it won't be friendly.

Ever since that bridge collapse in Minneapolis, I've had a thing about old, rickety bridges. There's one here that we have to go over a lot, and I feel a sense of relief wash over me every time we get to the end.

The funny thing is, I don't think I'd be afraid of the Mackinac Bridge at all. I've done the annual bridge walk a few times, so I "trust" that bridge.

Oh.. I am scared of sharks, definitely.

We have ton of snakes around here in FL and gators and I hate them!!!

I am so with you on the mice, bees, bats, and unattended dogs. Also snakes and roaches/any insect that flies.

And now I'm afraid of grates.

Every time I see an unattended dog, I hear my great-grandmother's voice in my head yelling for me to get away before it gives me the rabies.

Then I laugh.

AGREEE, I hate mice. and cockroaches. ew

OMG I think I'm with you on ALL of these- sharks are the worst though, I never go out of my depth in the sea. And bats, getting caught up in my hair- aargh! But I think I'm more scared of being attacked by a human than an animal- that would be the worst. Thanks for a great scary start to the day!!

I also hate bees! I've been stung too many times randomly by either sitting or stepping on them!

I passionately dislike all insects. And weird sounds in the middle of the night.

Lauren said...

I hate pigeons! I'm always afraid one is going to randomly fly for my face. I'm with you on the bees too.

I would like to add snakes to the list and mention that I agree with everything above. Wholeheartedly.

I have respect for bees, they only have one stinger so they have to use it carefully. It’s wasps that terrify me! Winnipeg is over run with wasps in the fall every year and when we moved into our house we found out that we had THREE hives in our yard/house/garage. It was horrifying!

Lauren said...

I am 100% absolutely petrified of snakes. ANIMALS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE LIKE THAT!

I am totally with you on the pigeons! I had some bad experiences (see: pigeons flying INTO my face) while in Italy, and I haven't recovered.

Also, I'm afraid of mice (there's one currently living in my desk), snakes, bees, spiders and really anything that could bite/harm me.

Vomit. And centipedes. I find something very disconcerting about anything that needs to have that many legs. *shudders thinking about them*

Fire...I especially hate being around people who find fire facinating and have to compulsivly "stoke" the fireplace or wave things back and forth through a candle flame. Heebie Geebies...

I'm with you on the bees. Yesterdayd a dead one fell from the light in my office and I screeched despite the fact that it was dead.

Funny, I was just telling my boyfriend last night that I recently learned that people's top three fears are:

1. Snakes
2. Public speaking
3. Death

I think mine is that a loved one will die. However, I am also TERRIFIED of those grates in the sidewalk! I always walk around...

True story: My grandmother is a retired pigeon farmer.

And unattended dogs freak me right the hell out.

Holy sh*t, I am TERRIFIED of bees! Until December (when I got rear-eneded), the only car accident I'd ever been involved a bee that had been in my car FOR THREE DAYS. *shudder*

Bugs, especially roaches and spiders, really freak me out.

Breaking down on the side of the highway or in the middle of nowhere is something that wigs me out a little.

bianca said...

PIGEONS. I'm totally scared of them. Especially if I'm walking downtown. OR if I'm eating outside and they start to congregate. Freaks me out.

Anonymous said...

I am totally not judging you at all, because every single thing on your list makes me feel very uncomfortable as well! Ugh, grates just creep me out, and I agree, the thought of catching a heel in one is frightful!

i am such a wuss. i'm scared of sharks, snakes, spiders, hell any bug really. and gutters. oh man. i can't stand them.

I definitely have the water fear thanks to Jaws. I saw it when I was really young and now I can't swim in anybody of water that I can't touch ground in or at least see the bottom. And I'm also absolutely PETRIFIED of the dark.

Pam said...

Pigeons...yuck!

I'm also terrified of jellyfish, fire, tornadoes, when people ride bikes with no hands and when airplanes turn. I get nervous even thinking about any of those things.

I am SO, SO, SO with you on the mice. I haven't seen one in real life for a good decade, but the thought of them completely unnerves me!

I couldn't even enjoy the Ratatouille movie...eww, gross...a mouse crawling all over the kitchen...yuck!!

Bats are icky too!

And spiders. Gosh, I am a wuss!

If I kill a spider always scared that friends of spider will come back and haunt me in my sleep. Irrational I know. Came from, all places, an episode of Get Smart.

Oh honey, mice can climb anything and they scare the crap out of me! Luckily I've only encountered one in my life.

Otherwise, spiders and I are not on good terms. Even the smallest one scares the crap out of me. I consider it huge progress that I'm even able to kill them now...after 5 minutes of being scared that it will leap on me as I try to smush it!
