But this got me to thinking about a list in college that I made of "essential movies" (determined by my guy friends) that I needed to see. Yeah from this list, I've seen only a handful of them and the "absolute essential" list remains untouched.
Looks like it's time to update the Netflix queue. So here is my list of movies, including some cult classics, I've never seen.
Movies I've never seen (but apparently should):
- Fight Club
- Swingers
- Animal House
- Lord of the Rings trilogy
- This is Spinal Tap
- Fletch (I've only seen half)
- Clerks (again, only seen half)
- Rocky Horror Picture Show
- Blade Runner
- Blues Brothers (being from Chicago, this is a tough one to own up to)
- Scarface
Feel free to join in on the teasing or let me know what movies you've never seen or that you're afraid to admit to never seeing. There is no judgement here. Take a look at my list!
Well everyone, tomorrow I am off to Union Station to jump on the Amtrak home for the holiday. I hope everyone travels safe and has a very good Thanksgiving. I plan on indulging in the Elegant Farmer apple pie myself.
I'll be back on Friday with a post about my post-Thanksgiving shopping. More deals, no mercy!
Reader note: Wow, thank you everyone for the comments on yesterday's dating "cut off" ages. A lot of really interesting and great comments. I also enjoyed the man perspective on this too. I'm glad to know I am not alone in having something like this and I agree with many of you that compatibility matters a lot when picking the person you date, not just age.

i totally understand what u mean! there are SO many 'cult' movies which i havent watched yet pretend at parties anyway:):) like star trek, lotr, planet of the apes, godfather, etc...lol
Don't worry, I have never seen Blues Brothers all the way through. When Dan found out....um....it didn't go well
My votes are to see "Spinal Tap" and "Clerks". I heart those movies.
But don't feel bad...I constantly get ridiculed because I've never seen "Star Wars".
Fight Club is a must! As is Animal House, but its better to be drunk. I went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the theater once and it was so much better than the movie, audience participation and all.
Lady, you need to get movin'!
LOTR?? Seriously??!
But in all honestly, I have never seen Blues Brothers either, therefore I also fail.
I haven't seen a lot of those movies either. Not really my taste. As for Fight Club, I liked the book more. I know, I know, I'm one of those people. You should read it first though!
I've actually never seen any of those movies either, not a one!
You've never seen Fight Club? Swingers? This Is Spinal Tap?!
Say it isn't so!!
Spinal Tap is my favorite :) You're coming over and we're watching it. End of story.
Have a fun holiday!
LOTR sucks anyway... don't bother watching it.
Definitely watch scarface. I loved it.
My movies? I've never seen Office Space or Boondock Saints.
Of the movies on your list, I've only seen Fight Club and Spinal Tap. I've never seen the others, so don't feel so bad. I think they're more "guy" movies, anyway.
OK Fight Club and Scarface you MUST see. Right now, this minute. No you can wait till you have time.
Have a great holiday heading back home. Can't wait to hear all about it.
I just read Maxie has never seen Office Space!!!! Ok another must!
"I don't really want to talk about my flare"
I've never seen Indiana Jones, which is apparently blasphemy.
I actually love it when I can think of older movies I have yet to see. We sometimes rent old Alfred Hitchcock movies, and they are almost always so damn good!!
I've never seen any of those movies either. Don't really want to. The only ones I have an interest in seeing is "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show." I've seen pieces of "Scarface" and just wasn't all that interested.
and im sorry im soooo rude! i forgot to introduce myself. i cam across ur blog today and absolutely LOVE it.!
also, i think u have to catch miss potter (if u havent)..one of the silent greats in my opinion!

I would thumbs up to Fight Club, LOTR and Spinal Tap. I don't think i've seen the rest either....actually never heard of them!
:O I am AWFUL at seeing classics. I haven't seen any. But even I have seen LOTR, Blade Runner and Fight Club! I blame that on ex boyfriends though. All their fault.
I haven't seen a lot of those either. I do love Swingers so you should definitely see it!
I have the Notebook on Netflix coming in a few weeks, I've yet to see that.
OMG! You've never seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show?!?!
That movie is a CLASSIC.
"Let's do the time warp aaagaaain"
Haha, no worries, I've never seen any of those movies either. I guess I should get on that too..
Ha. The only ones on your list that I HAVE seen are Swingers and Animal House. At least you're in good company ;o)
Ok...some of your movies, are some of my movies. But Clerks is awesome. I'm also biased because a friend of mine is in it, but it's still awesome.
I feel your pain with Blues Brother, though... I'm from PHILLY and I have never in my life seen Rocky. I'm surprised I haven't been disowned yet. I did see the new one with Milo whatever his last name is, but Rockys 1 through 4 (because I'm told Rocky 5 doesn't exist) I've never seen.
I highly recommend Clerks, but then again, I'm from New Jersey, so I may have some bias there.
I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies, much to the chagrin of everyone I know!
You must watch Fight Club & Swingers!! Oh and Swingers - it really gets better each time you watch it so keep that in mind! :)
Those are such "guy movies"! I've seen most of them and, for the most part, they're not as great as people make them out to be. Sure, there are some great one-liners (which makes them so quotable) but overall they're mostly "meh."
Although, I will say Clerks is fabulous but it certainly became funnier after my husband worked in a convenience store while we were dating.
You've never seen lord of the rings/?? SERIOUSLY?!?
i am so not an expert on this, but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I have never seen any of those movies either (and I don't really feel the need to).
Dude, don't feel bad. Out of the movies you've listed, I've only seen Fight Club, part of LOTR and Clerks. Guess I have some movies to watch!
There is a long winter ahead, so you have plenty of time to watch all of those movies!
there are so many movies i haven't seen that matt makes fun of me for, about half of them are on your list. i also haven't seen any of the godfather movies, whoops.
God I hate that when people make fun of me because I also have this list with must see cult movies one of the is Clockwork Orange!
I have to admit I always end up renting the newest Chick Flick instead of watchin something of the list so don't worry you are not alone ;)
I am horrible at seeing movies. My friends freak out at me all the time. I just love my favorite movies, so whenever I chose a movie to watch, I pick one of my old faves.
Rocky Horror Picture Show is an awesome movie, so you should definitely see that.
i always hear the same thing from my man - "you've never seen ______!"
i also have not seen most of those, but rocky horror show and fight club are awesome.
I haven't seen Swingers either and my boyfriend will not let me forget it.
I've never seen any of the Godfather movies.
I just sorta fell in here because Google Reader said you were interesting :-) its true too!
The only films on your list that I've seen were: Clerks, Rocky Horror and Scarface.
I'm not too fashionable when it comes to films I guess...
i have seen almost all of those films except LOTR. And that is ok.
i really never want to see it.
I've never seen a Star Wars, Star Trek or a Lord of the Rings movie!
it's only the LOTR trilogy i've seen on that list - and that was just because i loved the books. have no desire to see most of the rest apart from "clerks" cos i like kevin smith films.
Notwithstanding the other movies on the list, there are a few in there that are good and entertaining, but I have one recommendation... If you can find "Rocky Horror Picture Show" being shown in a theater with a live supporting cast, it is a LOT more fun. Drink beer, and be prepared to laugh your butt off. The film is intersting and quirky, and you;ll never look at Tim Curry the same way again, but the live cast playing along to the film in the theater brings out a lot of little things in there actions that make the trip much more worthwhile. AND YOU ARE A VIRGIN UNTIL YOU DO GO SEE IT IN THE THEATER!!!!!
Um...the list that you just posted...I haven't seen a single one of those movies, either!!! Ha! Perhaps we should have a movie party next time I'm in Chicago!
Guys also tend to quote Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell movies. I've at least seen those.
I'm not too worried about this list... I haven't seen any of the movies either ;-)
I haven't gotten around to most of those movies either, and yes, I also smile and pretend I've seen them. Although I do love Fight Club...
I feel sad that you've never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show. That is a must do before 30!
It's ok not to have seen cult movies, but as a Chicagoan you've got to watch Blues Brothers. There's no way out of that one.
Oh man, there are still tons of movies i need to see as well. It's funny, FOUR people this week made fun of me for not seeing Spinal Tap. FOUR! I guess i'm watching that next...
But really, you should see Blues Brothers. It's awesome. Clerks and Rocky Horror are kind of overrated in my opinion.
Brad Pitt's abs alone are reason enough to see Fight Club--now! Hot damn. I'm gonna need a minute here...
Love that movie.
Wow. You know, there are a lot of movies I haven't seen, either, but my friends freshman year of college basically made me watch a lot of these cult classics. And I was kinda obsessed with LOTR as a kid, so I saw the midnight showings...
I wouldn't worry about it. If your life doesn't feel empty without having seen these movies, I doubt they'll make much of a difference. You know?
