Exceptions to my dead inside nature

I may be dead inside, but I still cry during certain books or movies. I'm really not a big crier but sometimes certain moments or scenes just really get me and I've become so engrossed in a character or story that a turn of events just hits me hard.

And because I have grown exceptionally sappy in my late 20s, I still can't control the urge to cry from certain movies and books.

So here is a list of books, movies, etc. that have made me cry. Two of them in particular made me cry so hard that I had to stop watching/reading, get myself together and then go back to finish it.

Steel Magnolias
The funeral scene gets me every time. D*mn you Sally Field!

Terms of Endearment
The last quarter of the movie make me cry every time. D*mn you Shirley MacLaine!

Bridges of Madison County
I can't believe I am admitting that I cried reading this book. Shame

Time Traveler's Wife
One word: SOB. Another two words: convulsing sobs

Eclipse (book #3 in the Twilight series)
I might have been hormonal when reading the end of this, but I cried so hard I couldn't fall asleep afterward

Titanic
Outside of the cheesiness, the ending was sad, seriously

Armageddon
The scene with Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler gets me. Breaks my heart

My Girl
Loved this movie and the funeral scene, just heartbreaking

So what have I learned from this. I am a S-A-P, much like I'm a S-I-S-S-Y. You may not agree with me on all of these, but there are a few that, well, if you didn't cry, you're the one who is dead inside. Kidding!

Updated: I forgot to add too that I'm a nasty crier. Like my face gets all red, eyes are puffy and makeup runs. During Juno, another movie I cried in, tears started and when my friend Liz looked over at me, I actually said, "look away!" like I was a monster.

What books or movies make you cry every time you watch/read them?

Well tomorrow if Friday and I am wicked excited about this weekend. That's right, wicked.

Be sure to check back for a full weekend key learnings recap, which should be interesting because on Saturday, Chicago celebrates St. Patrick's Day! Let me know you are all doing anything fun to celebrate.

Armageddon is my favourite movie ever. I've seen it at least a dozen times and it makes me bawl every time!

I rarely cry, ever. But today, I bawled my eyes out when I watched the movie The Namesake.

I had read the book but somehow the movie did me in. It was an ugly cry.

I sobbed during New Moon. Like, the entire way through.
And The Time Traveler's Wife was a beautiful book.
I also cried at Armageddon, and my sister made fun of me.

armageddon gets me every. fricken. time. and only because my dad looks just like bruce willis, so i always end up substituting bruce with my dad. and then of course i'm liv tyler. and this would absolutely happen in real life, so by the time it happens i'm bawling and rubbing my snot everywhere.

as soon as the movie's over, i have to call my dad and tell him i love him, too, regardless of where i am. my friends think i'm "adorable."

ugh.

I'm a crier. Always have been. I sometimes even cry in commercials. I'm a sap to the extreme.
My friend and I watched Bridges of Madison County one afternoon together and both sobbed uncontrollably, Steel Magnolia's did me in, and during Terms of Endearment I was a mess of tears.

I almost started crying reading this. Steel Magnolias gets me every time. And of course The Notebook.

When I read Marley and Me I was sobbing. Tears and snot running down my face. I couldn't even breath out of either nostril. I cried when I saw the movie too but not as bad. I was in public so I had to protect my street cred.

Would you believe that, when I clicked on your blog, I had tears in my eyes from something I had just read before? Like, literally, right now, I have tears dripping down my face?

I swear, I cry all the time now. I hate it and I love it, if that makes any sense at all. I think it's good to be touched by things, but sometimes I hate how open and vulnerable it can make you feel.

As far as movies that make me cry--oh good heavens, I could make SUCH A LIST. Worst ever, though? PS I Love You. I won't ever watch that again unless I *want* to sob for two days, and why would I want that?

Oh and hey - The Namesake (Jhumpa Lahiri) is one of the best-written, most-engaging stories of all time, but, if you read it, be ready to CRY YOUR EYES OUT. (at least I did. daily)

Monkey Bridge by Lan Cao makes me cry.. it's such a gripping story.

This weekend will be packed with birthday parties again, so no Saint Patrick's day for us. It's not really celebrated here.

I cry during everything. I am the biggest movie crier. It's what I'm known for. The worst is Milo and Otis. I still haven't been able to watch past the waterfall scene.

Who didn't cry during My Girl?! ;)

Ha - if I were to list all the many books, movies, TV shows, COMMERCIALS that make me cry, well, I'd probably be flagged for spam. I cry at EVERYTHING. It throws most people off because the rest of my personality can be grainy at best.

Usually, I'm not one to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (in fact, I pretty much hate the holiday). But, we just found out our neighbor will be cooking up some corn beef and cabbage, so we'll likely stop by their place and pretend to like the holiday.

I saw Armageddon on a 4-H exchange trip in Minnesota. I left the theater sobbing, seriously. Also? I kind of hate Titanic.

I loved the Time Traveler's Wife! I heard they were filming that here in Chicago last year with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana - it's not out for another year, but I can't wait.

I cry at everything. I cried when I saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway...because it was pretty. I also cried when I saw Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway, because Bernadette Peters was in it, and I love her.

If you want a really good tearjerker of a book... My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. It's being made into a movie, but I'm sure they'll screw it up. Also Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

And as for Steel Mags... I just have to say "I'd rather have fiften minutes of wonderful than a whole lifetime of nothin' special" and I burst into tears. I'm such a wuss.

Unknown said...

Oh. I almost forget. Fried Green Tomatoes. Favorite movie of all time... and I sob uncontrollably whenever it's on. And Boys on the Side.

Unknown said...

The book Marley and Me: Sobbing for over an hour. Re-read it...yep still cried my eyes out till I was blotchy. Sat there holding my dog (who probably thought I was crazy) and cried. I'm a sissy.

Ummm, I definitely cry during Armageddon; it sneaks up on me every time.

Steel Magnolias hits a little close to home for me with the whole kidney transplant/dying thing and my own kidney transplant. Even though it's a movie and nothing like my life, I still have to avoid it because I get too emotional.

Lauren said...

We are book/movie sisters!!! These are MY FAVORITES TOO!!!!

Anonymous said...

I cry ALL THE TIME. Most recently, I tear up at the Plan B commercials. Something about girls facing unplanned pregnancy just gets me so emotional! Even before I was dating someone I'd get all misty about it, so it's not that.

Anyway, I cry at a lot of TV shows and movies and whatnot. Can't think of anything in particular. Definitely Armageddon though. So sad.

(BTW, this is Allison, the girl who was interviewed w/ you for the NYT at BlogHer. Not sure you remember me, but hi!)

My Girl used to get me all of the time as a kid - I couldn't even listen to the song by The Temptations without balling. Titanic and Armageddon get me too, as well as Forrest Gump, Field of Dreams and Big Fish (uncontrollably sobbed at this one).

Jodi Picoult's The Pact and My Sister's Keeper had me crying like a baby. I think I cried when reading The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood too, but I'm not 100 percent sure about that. =)

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with these choices. I literally sob like a baby when I watch My Girl and Steel Magnolias.

Anonymous said...

Oh wow. Ok, the first movie I cried at was Free Willy. I'm not kidding. I STILL cry every time I see Titanic. My Girl makes me cry. LOVE ACTUALLY is one that makes me cry tears for every emotion. And yes, I cried during both Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

Abby said...

What a great list! For some reason, I always thought "My Girl" was kinda freaky. Not sure why...

I cry at the drop of a hat... seriously, a pet adoption ad or sappy email is all it takes. I sobbed towards the end of The Notebook and Marley & Me so much so I had to dry my eyes to continue reading. Cried like a total sissy watching Million Dollar Baby and I cry almost weekly watching Ghost Whisperer. Great topic!

Mandy said...

I was never a big crier either, but apparently the older you get the more you cry. I sob like a baby during Beaches and just about any good play will move me to tears.

Unknown said...

Time Traveler's Wife scarred me for life.

A few others I love/hate:
Atonement - did NOT see it coming until it was too late!!!
The Notebook - I know, but still
Romeo & Juliet (the Decaprio version)

Unknown said...

Oh, and Benjamin Friggin Button. I felt like lunatic leaving the theater. I probably looked like I'd been beaten. Damn you Brad Pitt.

SA said...

Dude, I love Titanic. Cheesy or not. And yes, the ending always gets me.

I can't watch My Girl anymore. The first time I saw it was the day my great grandmother died. And hearing about that and then seeing Thomas J. die after all the bee stings....

Yeah, I can't watch it. Which sucks because I actually really like that movie. :(

i cry at a LOT of movies but funeral scenes usually do me in (my girl, beaches, steel magnolias, etc).

I also cry at the part in forest gump when 'little forest' starts running from the bullies and his leg braces come off.

...and every other episode of Oprah usually ends with me in tears.

LWLH said...

Movies I cried to:
-Steel Magnolias..ditto
-The Notebook..when the 2 old people died ripped my heart out
-Fox & The Hound..I'll admit I was in second grade with the chicken pox and I just thought it was soo sad they couldnt be friends.
-Nights in Rondanthe- I say Damn you to Diane Lane!..Me and my g/f left the theatre looking like someone just killed our puppy.

It always when someone dies that I cry in movies unless its an action flick.

Cheryl said...

Eclipse? For reals? Kidding.

I cry at Field of Dreams now, b/c it was my dad's favorite movie. Schindler's list. Actually insert any Holocaust movie/book here.

Of course, I'm such a sap I cry at Hallmark commercials sometimes.

Maxie said...

Not Armageddon??? That one ALWAYS gets me.

EP said...

I'm really emotional during movies. Seriously. I cry during happy AND sad scenes, and that kind of drives me crazy. (This also makes my boy laugh to no end. I'll even tear up when he says something exceptionally sweet.)

I boo-hooed at the end of My Dog Skip. And Titanic, My Girl, Steel Magnolias, and so many more that I cannot even mention them.

Anonymous said...

Titanic makes me cry every time too, and that makes me feel like an idiot, because I know exactly what is going to happen, heh! Oh well, enjoy your weekend ;)

Jenny Grace said...

I too, am dead inside. I don't cry at all in "real life" but I can bawl like a baby for books and movies and heck even hallmark commercials.

I have to tell you, the more I read your blog, the more I feel that we did not adequately hang out in SF last July.

Katie said...

haha, for some reason, now I want to watch all of those...

Terms of Endearment gets me every dang time. I start crying leading up to the scene where she sees the boys in the hospital, just knowing what's coming. I am glad to know that I'm not completely heartless though.

I have let about five people borrow my copy of The Time Traveler's Wife and they all reported back that they cried while reading it.
