My Sex and the City Saturday

***Note: this post does not contain spoilers***

So I did it, I went and saw Sex and the City today - even though it is an insanely gorgeous day in Chicago today. Ripe with tourists.

Let's get to the good stuff first, then I'll explain about my overall moviegoing experience on this one - it's a gem.

My thoughts on the movie
As a pretty big fan of the TV show, I was overall happy with the movie. It was great to see the characters again and of course, because I love fashion, I was half there to ogle the clothes too. The clothes, especially the handbags, were insane, just as I hoped they would be. I found myself near biting my hand - particularly at a few Louis Vuitton and Chanel bags - because they were so pretty.

I'm glad I saw the movie, but I won't lie - part of me was expecting something a bit more. While the fashion and "labels" were great, it seemed like it indulged a bit to much in product placement. Example, the Sprint phones and shopping bags proudly displaying Versace, Louis Vuitton and and Chanel. Hey I love labels but don't drown me in it. They never did to that extent on the show so it was more of a distraction in the movie. But, as always, I love the friendship between the women. I hope my close friends would do many of the same things that they do for each other for me.

I won't see the movie again until DVD but overall it's a solid choice. Oh an you don't need to be a long-time fan of the show to jump in the movie - although it probably wouldn't hurt.

My moviegoing experience
This was actually the most fun part of the last two days. So because of my poor planning, all of last night's showings in Chicago were sold out - like a week ago. Crazy! I was forced, literally, to see it today, even though I'm sure a few women would have scalped tickets.

I go over to the AMC around 5:30 to get my Saturday tickets and I was shocked by the sheer number of women camped out for their evening shows. At 5:40 p.m. there was a line of 40-50 women waiting for the 7 p.m. show! Women running up the escalator to meet friends or get in line, squealing and giggling and hugging when they finally got in line. There was a lot of estrogen and sheer hormone power in that lobby last night. I can only imagine what the inside of the theater experience was like.

People watching
I love this part of living in the city because no matter what, there is always something new that you see.

I think it's really cool that people were dressing up to go to the movie theater because, when does that happen anymore? But, I think some people were confused about how to embody the SATC show when going to see it.

For example, while leaving the theater last night, a woman was stumbling in the street because of her insanely bedazzled shoes with the plastic heel. Not exactly Manolo's but okay. The kicker had to be the polyester/rayon-blend one-shoulder dress that was Saran Wrapped to her body. Again, not Chanel but okay. The best part of the entire package wasn't even the holey Old Navy sweater jacket she wore over this ensemble, but rather it was the "colorful" conversation she was having with someone on the phone. I'll save the details but the words, "c*cksucker," and "motherf*cker" were used several times. Classy. Definitely a Samantha.

Then today, a row of women were there together, celebrating the movie, which is great. It wasn't until about halfway through the movie, following a lot of "oh no he didn't," and "you go girls" that I hear glass clinking. GLASS. These women smuggled in champagne and real glasses to the movie! OMG! Then when one got really excited during the movie, we heard one of those glasses break. Oops. Everyone from that row promptly left the theater at the credits.

So that's my SATC Saturday, what did everyone else think? I'm sure the blogosphere is exploding about this so I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts.

Now it's time for a nice smoothie from Bobtail and a little more sun on my pasty skin.

I am so with you on the prodict placement! When they had Vitamin Water all over the seats at the fashion show, I thought, Ok, a little much.

I had to read your post pronto after you said some ladies bought glasses! Who would even think of that?

Last night I was finally able to read my mags because I no longer had to worry about spoilers. In Entertainment Weekly, Michael Patrick King said that the show and movie did not accept money for product placement. On the other hand, New Line Cinema did secure 7 promotional partners.

I guess the product placement in the movie didn't bug me, but the commercials for cars and Vitamin Water were kind of grinding. It was a little overkill and I think that can turn viewers off.

At the concession stand yesterday I asked if they had any sold out shows, and the lady said "we're not New York or CHICAGO, but we're doing good." I guess it can pay to be in a smaller city. :)

I agree about the product placement- but I still loved the movie! And I'm from a suburb right near Chicago, so luckily I got to hit up one of those theatres instead of any insane one downtown!

I think it will be a while before it comes out here in the Netherlands, but I've heard really good reviews. Still, I'm much more of an arthouse film type of girl. I saw 'into the wild' yesterday about a young man trying to escape society by following the example of people such as thoreau and going into nature - it was actually based on a true story, and very touching.

The product placement didn't even phase me for some reason, lol. I <3'd the movie too though! It's funny that it was so busy there, because I went Friday night and when the movie opened they still had 110 tickets to sell in the theatre!

glasses in the theater?! I love it! The last movie I "dressed" up for was G.I. Jane (yeah, I'm old) though there have been many comic book movies I wanted to dress for but the hubby keeps saying something along the lines of "I'm not going to be seen in public with you".

i loved the movie and though i definitely recognized the excessive product placement i wasn't turned off by it. i went into the movie with no expectation because i didn't want to be disappointed and am happy to say i loved it. i've blogged about it too!

I love how people smuggled champagne and glasses in. That is awesome!

Okay, I've not seen it yet. I LIKE the show, but not exactly a die-hard. Actually, I thought I was going with friends next week for someone's 30th b-day, but turns out the b-day girl already saw it. Oh well.

Re: the champagn. Next time, I would suggest these girls get the little mini-can's of pink "sparkling wine" made by Soppia Copola. They are very tasty, don't break and have a little pink straw to boot. Much more movie-smuggling appropriate.

I enjoyed it, but like you not enough to go see it again. And as my friend Jo said there wasn't really enough sex. But it was true to form in every other way.

I was surprised when I went to see it by how many girls went with their boyfriends. I wouldn't have gone with anybody buy my girls.

I'm sure there was just so much product palcement because half of them spent a good deal of money just to get their name in there!

Glad you liked it! I'm going to see it in the next week.

The movie did seem to be a bit of a commercial, didn't it?

Overall, I thought SATC hit all the right sentimental notes. I had a few major problems with the plot (mostly that the Carrie-Big drama seemed pretty recycled), but I loved the female friendships and the nostalgic indulgence of the whole thing.

BLASPHEMY ALERT: I have never once seen SATC. EVER. Not that I boycott it, I just never found the time or reason to. Should I see the movie?

I totally agree. I'm a fashion junkie and I was sooo turned off with the BIG THREE fashion names (LV, Channel, Versace) puked up all over the screen. The show was never that way - except for the Manolos - and without getting all feminazi, it seemed like the final attainment of all things material was the culmination of what these woman wanted, once they'd found love.
Other than that I loved the movie and it hit pretty much all the right notes.
